When the Heart Sees

It never ceases to amaze me how when you get to know a person and have a close relationship with them, it’s like you’re automatically tuned to their frequency.

They have the same hair color as everyone else, yet you can see the back of their head and recognize them instantly. A car that looks like theirs catches your eye out of hundreds. You can distinctively recognize their voice in a noisy crowd from several feet away even though you weren’t listening for it. Or you see them in the distance and instinctively know it’s them, and you aren’t even sure how you know, unless your mind subconsciously remembers how they walk or carry themselves.

But sometimes I think it’s a little more than that.

When we have that close connection with a person, some instinct teaches us to understand them on an intuitive level.

That’s why you can tell that your best friend’s fake smile is hiding tears, when everyone else is fooled.

That’s how you know what they need, how to be there for them in certain circumstances.

You just know.

Sometimes the heart recognizes what the mind cannot rationally process, because when it comes down to it, relationships are based on more than logic. They’re based on love, and who has ever been able to explain that? You can say it’s chemistry or common interest, but there’s a component that can’t be explained by science or psychology.

That’s partly what makes every relationship unique — you’re connected, somehow, by what the heart sees.
